COID Identifier Policy

Effective August 9, 2026 · Version 2026-08-09

First come, subject to rights

COIDs are generally made available on a first-come, first-served basis, but registration creates only a revocable licence to use the identifier on CareOfID. It does not override another party’s trademark, identity or other legal rights.

Prohibited conduct

Do not register or use a COID to impersonate, falsely imply affiliation or endorsement, divert users through confusion, demand payment from a rights owner, disrupt another organization, or engage in a pattern of abusive registrations.

Rights review

CareOfID considers the complete context, including legitimate interests, trademark jurisdiction and services, prior use, profile content, logos, linked destinations, verification evidence and apparent bad faith. The complainant must provide evidence and certify that the report is accurate and authorized. The holder will ordinarily receive notice and an opportunity to respond unless urgent safety or legal concerns require temporary action.

Possible outcomes

CareOfID may take no action, request more evidence, add or remove verification, restrict visibility, suspend use, require renaming, reserve, transfer or cancel a COID. A complaint does not guarantee transfer. Complex disputes may require agreement of the parties or an enforceable decision from a competent authority.

No sale of disputed identifiers

Offering a disputed COID to a rights owner for profit may be treated as evidence of bad faith.
